Genetics
Is G13 Haze indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree
G13 Haze is a sativa-dominant hybrid whose breeder, Barney’s Farm, lists G13 × Hawaiian Sativa; Leafly says G13 × Haze, and Weedmaps and AllBud say Hawaiian Haze.1,2,3,4 G13 itself is an indica with no verified pedigree: its government-laboratory origin is a legend that Weedmaps says cannot be proven.5,6
Family tree
- G13Indica; origin a legend; an Afghani-type clone per Weedmaps and Sensi Seeds
- Hawaiian SativaPer Barney’s Farm; Leafly says Haze, Weedmaps and AllBud say Hawaiian Haze

The two parents
G13 is an indica that Leafly users call sleepy, euphoric and relaxed and that Weedmaps lists as Afghani × Afghani, an old-school cultivar of unknown exact parentage; Sensi Seeds calls it “a premium Afghani plant”, and Mr Nice says its G13 is predominantly Afghan and was only ever available as a female clone.5,6,10,11 SeedFinder counts 125 direct descendants, and the earliest dated description it reproduces is Neville’s 1987 Seed Bank catalog, which calls G-13 “an outstanding indica cutting reputedly ‘liberated’ from the government research program in Mississippi”.12
The sativa side is less clear. Barney’s Farm’s genetics field says Hawaiian Sativa, which Weedmaps describes as a family of island landraces (Maui Wowie, Kona Gold, Kauai Electric) with roughly ten weeks of flowering; the breeder does not say which line it used.1,13 Haze, the parent Leafly names, took root in Santa Cruz in the 1960s from Colombian, Mexican, Thai and South Indian genetics and was later backcrossed and stabilized in Amsterdam by Nevil, according to High Times.2,14,15
Which Haze? Five accounts
Sources agree on G13 but not on the other parent, and other breeders sell different G13 × Haze crosses under the same name.
| Second parent | Who says so |
|---|---|
| Hawaiian Sativa | Barney’s Farm’s genetics field on both seed entries; AllBud’s entry for the Barney’s version1,16,17 |
| Haze | Leafly; Barney’s Farm’s own regular-seed description (“the cross of G13 and Haze”)2,16 |
| Hawaiian Haze | Weedmaps; AllBud’s main entry3,4 |
| Haze IBL (Santa Marta Gold × Wacky Weed × Colombian lines) | Mr Nice Seedbank, for its own version by Nevil and Shantibaba11 |
| Neville’s Super Haze | Soma Seeds, for its own version: “It was crossed to a Super Haze by Neville”9 |
Weedmaps also relays a longer Barney’s Farm account in which G13 was first combined with Skunk #1 for stability and the result crossed with a Hawaiian Sativa; no Barney’s Farm page we opened mentions Skunk #1.3
Where G13 comes from: a legend, not a pedigree
Every account of G13’s origin traces back to a story, not a document. The accounts below are given as each source tells them.
| Account | Who says so |
|---|---|
| “An outstanding indica cutting reputedly ‘liberated’ from the government research program in Mississippi, and now we have it” | Neville’s Seed Bank catalog, 1987, as reproduced by SeedFinder12 |
| “According to some accounts”, the CIA, FBI and other agencies bred super hybrids at a “super-secret installation” at the University of Mississippi in the late 1960s, and a technician liberated a single cutting | Leafly5 |
| “The first (and, so far, only) known strain to be bred by the US government” at the University of Mississippi, “secretly procured and brought to Holland circa 1986” (stated as fact) | High Times, 201415 |
| “A government Indica” allegedly developed by the US federal government in the 1970s | Weedmaps, relaying Barney’s Farm3 |
| “Rumored to have been created from a 1970’s secret US federal medical marijuana distribution program” | AllBud, entry for the Barney’s Farm version17 |
| “A premium Afghani plant that (according to legend) was smuggled out of a government research centre by a technician” | Sensi Seeds10 |
| “Supposedly” taken from a US government research facility; the author is skeptical | Leafly’s sponsored grow guide, 201718 |
| “One of cannabis’s all-time great origin stories”, of which “almost none of it can be proven”; “no reliable evidence that federal agents actually bred G13” | Weedmaps6 |
| “Highly unlikely that ‘G13’ is anything but a Hollywood product”; the government’s own University of Mississippi cannabis tested at roughly 2–5% THC | Erowid, 200119 |
| A story probably created by growers to promote the plant, told in Santa Cruz as a hybrid “stolen from the CIA back in the ’70s” | USC Digital Folklore Archives, 200820 |
| “Supposedly first created in a top-secret, secure US government cannabis research facility in the 1970s”; a researcher purportedly gave a cutting to Nevil Schoenmakers | The Cannigma, 202021 |
Decades differ (late 1960s or 1970s), as do the agency and the route to the Netherlands. This site repeats the legend only with these attributions.
How sativa is it?
Sativa-dominant in every source that gives a lean: Barney’s Farm lists 80% sativa / 20% indica on both seed entries, AllBud the same, Weedmaps “sativa-dominant hybrid”, and SeedFinder files the Barney’s and Mr Nice versions as mostly sativa and Soma’s as indica/sativa.1,3,4,9,11,16,22 Leafly files it simply as a hybrid, placed on the energizing side of its scale.2 SeedFinder’s growers document three phenotypes of the Barney’s line, from long and sativa-dominant to short and indica-dominant.22
Six breeders, one name
SeedFinder lists six breeders’ versions of G13 Haze: Barney’s Farm, California Connoisseur Genetics, GreenLabel Seeds, Mr Nice Seedbank, Seedsman and Soma Seeds.23 Barney’s Farm’s, sold as feminized and as regular seeds, is the version that won the Cup.1,16,24
The others are different crosses. Mr Nice’s, credited to Nevil and Shantibaba, is G13 × Haze IBL, “a hybrid that has had to be inbred since the G13 was only available as a female clone”, sold as regular seeds.11,25 Soma Seeds’ is G13 × Neville’s Super Haze and was never offered feminized; SeedFinder lists 36 crosses made from it.9 Two packets of “G13 Haze” can therefore carry different Haze parents.
What our lab data adds
Our strict name matching found only 14 flower tests of plain G13 Haze and excluded 2 results sold under near-miss names, "G13 Haze NYC Diesel" and "NYC × G13 Haze", 1 of them flower.26 The parent is counted separately: 97 flower tests of G13, with a median total THC of 24.17% against 20.30% for G13 Haze (only 14 tests, a small sample).26 Among the 117 near-miss results excluded from G13’s own count were 18 labeled "G13 × Hawaiian Sativa Trim", the cross Barney’s Farm names for G13 Haze, sold as trim under the parents’ names.1,26

Barney’s Farm’s Tangerine Dream (G13 × Neville’s A5 Haze, crossed again with G13) and Liberty Haze (a G13 male × Chem Dawg 91) are crosses of the parent G13, not of G13 Haze, although SeedFinder’s genealogy marks Liberty Haze as “probably” a G13 Haze cross.27,28
